Swiss aid for Greek floods
After huge forest fires, Greece is now being hit by heavy rainfall and flooding. Switzerland is therefore adapting its mission on the ground and providing support in the region of Thessaly, which has been severely affected by flooding, by transporting people and materials.
Switzerland is responding to an official request for assistance from Greece, which arrived during the fire-fighting operations of the previous forest fires. The Swiss team includes more than 20 members of the Swiss Army professional corps and three experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA), who are deployed with three Super Puma helicopters of the Swiss Army.
The mission is under the overall responsibility of the SHA and is expected to last until Sunday, 10 September 2023; the Swiss team is scheduled to return on Monday. (mk)
