Special transport of a giant mirror
It might have been a gift for Snow White's stepmother. Safran Reosc, a subsidiary of Safran Electronics & Defense, contracted Gefco France to transport a giant mirror prototype for the European Southern Observatory (ESO)'s ELT (extremely large telescope) from France to Spain last year.
At the end of November, two exceptional convoys left the Safran Reosc site in Saint-Pierre-du-Perray, in Ile-de-France, to join a scientific laboratory near Barcelona.
One of the convoys carried a prototype telescope mirror, while the other shipped two large-scale containers that had previously been used to transport other mirrors. The two convoys travelled more than 1,000 km in six days. (sh)
