Russian rail operator modernising fleet

Russia’s United Wagon Company (UWC) has delivered a new batch of 40 ft timber flat cars to rail operator Arkhbum, a subsidiary of the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill.

The units are equipped with 25 t axle-load bogies, feature a high load capacity of 74 t and a body volume that has been increased to 122 m3. The result is reduced costs per tonne of cargo, according to the current rail tariff.

The special design of the side rack base minimises unused space when transporting freight. Openings in the end wall allow unobstructed visual inspection of the car, UWC said.
Arkhbum owns and operates its own fleet of 2,500 railcars and eight diesel locomotives. In 2020 the rail operator raised its freight rail traffic by 19.1%, year-on-year. (ben)
