Quebec returns to the business with boxes

In Canada, the Quebec Port Authority (QPA) has concluded a long-term commercial agreement with Hutchison Ports and Canadian National Railway CN to build and operate the new deep-water container terminal.

Known as project Laurentia, its CAD 775 million (USD 568 million) budget will be financed primarily through the joint investment of the three partners. The QPA also wants the federal and provincial governments to complete the financing of the new container terminal on the Saint Lawrence River.

The deep-water terminal project will be the only facility in the region to be able to accommodate the new generations of ultra large container ships. It also benefits from a direct railway and highway connection to be enhanced by CN. According to a study from KPMG, the project will generate CAD 500 million (USD 370 million) in economic benefits in Québec. (kd)
