Progress with e-methanol hybrid ships
Stena Line has marked significant milestones in the construction of its Newmax hybrid vessels, with “Stena Futura” launched into the water and the keel laid for “Stena Connecta” at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai. Once operational, these vessels will boost freight capacity by 40% on the Belfast-Heysham route, catering to increasing demand between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
Designed to operate on methanol fuel, the vessels also feature technologies for battery propulsion and shore power, aligning with Stena Line’s sustainability goal to cut CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.
CEO Niclas Mårtensson highlighted the vessels’ role in meeting environmental targets while enhancing freight capacity. “Stena” Futura is scheduled to start service on the Irish Sea in autumn 2025. (pb)
