Private Seychelles airline eyes cargo business

Seychelles International Airways will take off today, 10 September 2020. It is a private airline founded by Robert Marie, a former pilot of Air Seychelles. According to Marie, the idea dates back to 2011, as the Seychelles' national carrier ran into financial difficulties and he wondered whether the airspace above the island republic in the Indian Ocean would again be dominated by foreign airlines, as Air France or British Airways did until 1985.

The new airline will be launched with a chartered A340, which initially shall be used exclusively for cargo traffic. Marie says that some freight rates have increased 14-fold during the corona crisis. He added that he was currently in negotiations to reduce the high prices by two thirds. (ah)
