Port of Switzerland hoists container flag high

Port of Switzerland, operator of inland ports on the River Rhine, has tabled its 2018 figures. They show that the river’s prolonged low water period had a negative impact on the results. Up to H1/2018, the company was expecting a new turnover record – but then extremely low water levels set in. All the Upper Rhine ports suffered declines.

Switzerland’s Rhine ports handled just below 4.7 million t of goods in 2018, 18.9% less than in 2017. Exports from the Swiss Rhine ports fell to 930,000 t, a drop of 12.4% compared to 2017. The volume of the most important commodities plunged by 20.3% to 3.77 million t. However, waterborne container traffic, at more than 119,000 teu (minus 0.1%) remained on a par with the record level in 2017.

Rail-side container handling at the port (2017: 18,298 teu) ceased to play a role as the respective lines were terminated. (kd)
