Port of Gothenburg electrifies inspection vessel

‘M/S Hamnen’, the port of Gothenburg's inspection vessel, has been retrofitted to electric propulsion. It has been in service at the port since 1979. The transition is part of the port's commitment to reducing emissions, with the electrification eliminating the 67 t of carbon dioxide previously emitted annually by the vessel.

The retrofit includes a new 250 kW electric motor and a 520 kWh battery bank, with the option to add more batteries in the future. The vessel also retains a diesel auxiliary engine for emergency use.

The electrification project, costing around SEK 19.8 million (approximately EUR 1.7 million), is expected to allow the vessel to operate on electricity 90% of the time, with a range of 6-7 hours at eco-speed. This initiative aligns with the Gothenburg Port Authority's goal to reduce port-related emissions by 70% by 2030. (pb)
