Peak season pushes Long Beach
The port of Long Beach recorded its busiest September and quarter ever in 2024, handling 829,499 teu, slightly surpassing the previous record set in September 2023.
This marked the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year cargo growth, driven by holiday-related goods and anticipation of labour contract deadlines for East and Gulf Coast seaports, which led to a brief strike in early October.
Imports rose by 2% to 416,999 teu, while exports fell by 12.8% to 88,289 teu, with empty containers increasing by 1.5%. The port moved 6.9 million teu in the first nine months of 2024, up 18.8% from the previous year. The third quarter also set a record, moving 2.6 million teu, surpassing the previous best set in Q2/2022. (pb)
