Parcel deliveries in Switzerland reach record high
With a throughput of more than 148 million, the Swiss Postal Service delivered a record quantity of parcels in 2019, which amounts to a 7.3% increase compared to the previous year (138 million). On the other hand, the quantity of letters sent by post continued to fall.
While the post despatched 1,898 billion letters in 2018, this figure dropped to 1,807 billion in 2019. At –5.6%, the volume of small consignments from abroad was also slightly lower. Substantial investment in infrastructure is required to handle the large volume of parcels.
The Swiss Postal Service was quick to foresee this trend and, as a first step, intends to invest more than CHF 190 million in new sorting facilities and parcel centres. (mw)
