On track for more railfreight in Australia

Port Botany in NSW Australia and Patrick Terminals are investing AUD 190 million (EUR 122 million) in extra rail capacity to address long-term demand in a sustainable way, by reducing CO2 emissions and the use of trucks, as trade volumes increase.

The strategy was recently outlined at the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) railfreight conference. The plan includes, among other things, expanding Port Botany’s on-dock rail capacity and providing more capacity for the two-way loading of trains.

Port Botany is Australia’s only container port with on-dock rails at each container terminal. The facility is now reported to move more than 400,000 teu a year by rail, up 64% since 2014. (ben)
