Nigerian port welcomes largest boxship

The Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT), run by International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) in Nigeria, has handled its largest container vessel to date, the 300 m, 6,660-teu capacity “Kota Cempaka” operated by Pacific International Lines (PIL). The ship loaded and discharged 2,000 teu during its call, marking a significant milestone for Eastern Nigeria.

PIL plans to deploy similar-sized vessels regularly in the region. OMT’s facilities, including 750 m deep-water berths and two mobile harbour cranes, have helped reduce vessel waiting times and double container capacity since commencing operations in 2021.

The Nigerian Ports Authority maintains a 12 m depth at the port, enabling large vessels to call at Onne port, aligning with global trends towards larger shipping vessels for economies of scale. (pb)
