Muted growth for Spanish ports in first quarter of 2019


According to the latest data published by Puertos de Estado, between January and April 2019, the Spanish ports of general interest moved a total of 182.1 million t of goods, 1.2% more than in the same period in 2018.

 

During the first 4 months of the year, general loads grew most, by 4.9%. 85.5% of the general cargo was concentrated in six ports: the Balearic Islands (12.4%) followed by Valencia (10.2%), Algeciras (6.2%), Bilbao (2.0%) and Barcelona (1.5%). Las Palmas dropped by a remarkable 11.3% in this period.

 

Containers were handled mainly in three ports that brought together 81.9% of this cargo: Algeciras moved 21.1 million t (+ 5.5%), followed by Valencia (20.5 million t; + 10.7%) and Barcelona (11.4 million t; +2.5).

 

Goods in containers in international transit totalled 39.9 million t, 6.0% more than between January and April of the previous year and were processed mainly in Algeciras (19.3 million t and + 4.7%), Valencia (12.4 million t and + 13.6%) and Barcelona (5.6 million t and + 10.3%). (kd)
