More work for Vienna Airport’s customs staff
The current normalisation in the aviation sector is also reflected in the amount of cargo that is processed by customs in airports.
In 2022, Vienna Airport handled 55,360 export consignments and 92,331 import consignments. In the first corona year 2020, the number of goods exported was only 44,669 and the number of goods imported only 84,445.
Among other things, about 3 t of medicinal products were intercepted in freight consignments - the majority of them: 45,000 packages of potency medicines that were actually destined for a stopover in Vienna and for shipment to Greece.
In another large consignment, in 30 cartons from Israel, the customs officers found - instead of "matsah tea leaves" as stated - 345 kg of khat. In total, around 430 kg of narcotic drugs were withdrawn from circulation in freight consignments in 2022.
