More wind power on Baltic Sea

After one year of experience of using rotor sails for the hybrid ferry "Copenhagen" on the Baltic Sea, Scandlines is planning the same equipment for its sister ferry "Berlin". The hybrid ferry "Berlin" also plies the Rostock-Gedser route, but unlike the "Copenhagen" it sails under the German flag.

The first rotor sail was installed in May 2020 and the data of one year of operation was evaluated. Since the rotor sail on the "Copenhagen" effectively resulted in CO2 savings of 4 -5%, it is now the "Berlin's" turn.

The route meets the conditions for achieving the best possible effect of the sail on the propulsion system, because the wind hits the sail at a right angle.

The rotor sail, which rises 30 m into the air, has the outward appearance of a smokestack. Scandlines plans to install the rotor sail on the "Berlin" in 2022. (sh)
