Lobito-Atlantic railway in Angola soon in operation

A ceremony has been held to mark the transfer of the 30-year concession of railway services and support logistics for the Lobito Corridor to the Lobito Atlantic Railway in Angola.

The corridor will be operated by the Lobito Atlantic Railway consortium comprising rail operator Ventura, the commodities industry company Trafigura and infrastructure manager Mota-Engil.

The Lobito railway extends for almost 1,300 km across Angola and then continues for 400 km into Congo to Kolwezi, the heart of the Copperbelt. . For the mining industry in particular, the rail line offers a fast and direct route from the mining regions to the Atlantic coast.

Realising the full potential of the railway will require an investment of USD 455 million for the Angolan side of the corridor securing 1,555 wagons and 35 locomotives. (ben)
