LHG forum debates green tech challenges
At its third "Green Port Technologies" forum last week, the Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG) emphasised the need for a diversified approach to sustainable port operations.
Managing director Sebastian Jürgens cautioned against solely relying on electric drives, highlighting the operational challenges for 24/7 terminal operations, such as increased equipment needs and higher costs. He called for continued investment in hydrogen fuel cell technology.
Manufacturers like Terberg, Movella, and Kalmar showcased advancements in e-drive technologies, including modular designs facilitating fuel cell use. Andreas Frye of the Gesellschaft für Umweltdienste (“company for environmental services”) highlighted the benefits of electric excavators in reliability and maintenance.
Jürgens urged policymakers to prioritise infrastructure development for hydrogen networks and charging points, vital for Germany’s export economy. The forum attracted over 80 participants, including representatives of Finnish and German ports, who explored innovations in green equipment. (pb)
