IRS to classify hybrid electric catamarans
Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has been awarded the task of providing classification services for six hybrid electric catamarans commissioned by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (Iwai).
These vessels, built at Hooghly Cochin Shipyard, will serve inland ferry routes with 50-passenger capacity each. They will feature electric propulsion via lithium-titanium oxide batteries and diesel generators in a hybrid mode.
IRS's guidelines ensure safe battery system installation and operation, aligning with the growing trend of sustainable maritime propulsion. IRS is committed to supporting ‘Make in India’ initiatives and green propulsion solutions. (pb)
