ICS on how to measure emissions
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the global association of shipowners that represents more than 80% of the world's merchant fleet, presented the data collection system of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London recently.
The CII is an operational index for all ships from 5,000 GT upwards that indicates their carbon intensity based on their emissions per tonne and mile sailed. The CII must be calculated annually using data obtained through the IMO fuel consumption data collection system, which came into force in 2019.
These are compared to the CII value established under the Marpol Convention for each type and size of vessel, which gives rise to its energy rating (A, B, C, D or E), which will be recorded in the Vessel Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).
Its application has not been without controversy since many shipowners consider that there are factors that are beyond their control and that can have a significant negative impact. (cd)
