Hybrid creature from the sea arrives in Berlin

A special aircraft has arrived in Berlin and will soon be on display at the historic Tempelhof Airport - alongside a C54 Skymaster and an Il-14. It is a Focke-Wulf Fw 200, which a number of aircraft enthusiasts have been restoring in Bremen since 1999.

The aircraft type with the nickname "Condor" was the world's first four-engine commercial aircraft and flew from Berlin to New York for the first time in 1938 without a stopover (25 hours for 6,300 km).

The now restored aircraft is a special "hybrid": it sank in the North Sea in 1942 and was recovered 57 years later. Its fuselage, damaged by salt water, had to be largely renewed, and the tail unit also received spare parts from another Fw 200 that had been shot down over Norway during the war. (ah)
