"Hell on Wheels" against tradition
In the run up to Thanksgiving, which is celebrated in the USA today, 28 November, Peta has been drawing attention to abuses in the keeping and transport of live animals.
The international animal welfare organisation dispatched "Hell on Wheels", its new life-size turkey transport truck covered with images of the birds crammed into crates on their way to slaughter, to Washington, DC. In addition to the visceral visuals, the truck bombarded everyone within earshot with actual recorded sounds of birds' cries, along with a subliminal message every ten seconds suggesting that people go vegan.
Last weekend's stop before the traditional "White House Turkey Pardon" was part of the truck's tour in 30 states, aiming to stoke compassion for the 46 million turkeys killed for Thanksgiving every year and pull back the curtain on the reality of the suffering behind each turkey roast. (ah)
