Heavy haul locomotives ordered for Brazil

The Brazilian logistics company VLI has ordered nine Wabtec Evolution Series locomotives for about BRL 200 million (EUR 36.22 million). The ES43BBI model is a 4,500 hp heavy-haul locomotive specifically designed for 1,000 mm gauge railways in Brazil. The first units are expected to be delivered in about 18 months.

The new locomotives meet the increased demand for cargo transport with Ferrovia Centro-Atlantica railways in the company's Central-East corridor in Brazil, through which freight from the steel industry, agribusiness, coal, fertilizers, fuel, and cellulose is shipped towards the port system of Espirito Santo. These shipments include a recently signed 30-year contract with LD Cellulose to transport dissolving pulp. (ben)
