Heathrow's 75th anniversary

Britain's Heathrow airport is celebrating its 75th anniversary as a commercial airport today, 31 May 2021. ‘Heathrow Historians’ are going to highlight the airport’s history through the personal stories of colleagues, members and passengers. Archive imagery and memories are available in the Heathrow Historians virtual museum.

CEO John Holland Kaye believes that “the Heathrow Historians will provide us with an opportunity to celebrate the people who made and make Heathrow possible, and to commemorate the long-serving connections many of our colleagues, passengers and local community members share with the airport.”

The global pandemic marks a difficult and challenging year in Heathrow’s history, which began in 1946, when it opened for civilian aviation. The airport experienced many significant events for the UK, including Queen Elizabeth II arriving on sovereign soil for the very first time as the reigning monarch; the Beatles returning to the UK as global superstars in 1964; some scenes for the film ‘Love Actually’ being filmed in Terminal 3 in 2003; and British ESA astronaut Tim Peake landing at Heathrow following his six-month trip to the International Space Station.
