Green light to test Ceneri base tunnel
The Swiss federal office for transport (FOT) has given its approval for the Swiss railways SBB to start trial runs in the new 15.4 km Ceneri base tunnel.
The trials will be conducted with commercial freight and passenger trains from September to December 2020. They form the last phase of preparation before the opening of the tunnel to regular traffic, which is scheduled for mid-December.
The tunnel creates a new link between the northern and southern part of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. Its launch will complete the Herculean task of building a new rail link through the Alps (NRLA). For railfreight, the Ceneri base tunnel ensures a level-track route through the Alps. (ben)
