Gothenburg links up with green corridor
“Laura Maersk”, the world's first methanol-powered container ship, has begun a weekly service between Bremerhaven and the port of Gothenburg. The new offer supports lower-emission ocean transport and helps customers reduce their supply chain greenhouse gas footprint. “Laura Maersk” is part of Maersk's initiative to use renewable methanol as fuel and the first of over 20 such ships planned for delivery by 2027.
The port of Gothenburg aims to become Scandinavia’s largest hub for renewable energy, and methanol is seen as key component in the fuel mix.
The new service also calls at Helsingborg, Halmstad, and Kalundborg. The vessel has a cargo capacity of 2,136 teu, a length of 172 m, and a maximum speed of 17.4 knots. (pb)
