Global container throughput high but volatile

The container throughput index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) increased from 123.7 points (seasonally adjusted) to 124.8 points in September, according to the current flash estimate.

The value of the Chinese ports' index declined, shrinking from 131.3 to 128.0. The European North Range Index is back, increasing from 113.5 (revised) to 119.3 points. The decline of the last months is thus revised.

The RWI/ISL container throughput index for October 2021 will be published on 30 November 2021. RWI's head of economic research Torsten Schmidt comments: "Container handling continues to recover from the slow phase during the summer months. However, world trade is still not running smoothly and container handling remains very volatile in the various regions of the world." (sh)
