German partnership for water logistics
HGK Shipping and Salzgitter Flachstahl have signed a contract for the long-term lease of three dry cargo ships, aiming to shift more logistics to inland waterways. The agreement follows a memorandum from August 2023 that designated HGK Shipping as Salzgitter's main inland shipping partner.
The plan includes building a new cargo ship tailored to Salzgitter's requirements and the West German canal region. It is part of a broader strategy to transition to more sustainable transport modes and enhance waterway logistics capabilities, with the first new vessel set to operate by July 2025.
Salzgitter's logistics strategy prioritises reducing road transport in favour of more eco-friendly and efficient water transport. (pb)
