First goods trains move through east tunnel
After the devastating accident a fortnight ago, goods trains began to run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) again yesterday (23.8.). The first goods train, a Rail Care composition, entered the tunnel from the south. The second was a mail train from the north.
Due to the clean-up and repair work, the GBT can only be used on one lane for the time being. Four goods trains will travel through the east tunnel one after the other in one direction and then in the opposite direction, which allows a total of about 100 goods trains to move through the tunnel per day.
Together with around 30 goods trains diverted via the panorama line, this is about as many as traversed the tunnel every day in autumn 2022. (ben)
