First converted locomotive joins CSX fleet
The hydrogen-powered locomotive was converted from an existing diesel locomotive using a hydrogen conversion kit developed by CPKC. In a next step, CSX will conduct field tests to further evaluate its performance and operational feasibility. The transformation was completed in less than twelve months at the CSX locomotive shop in Huntington, WV (USA).
For the project, the conversion team reused several components, including the frame, cab, traction motors, and trucks. Changing an existing unit into a next-generation locomotive further extends the useful life of the asset, CSX said. (ben)
