Electrolysis plant in the Port of Duisburg?

Duisport and Lhyfe are investigating the feasibility of building the first major electrolysis plant in the Port of Duisburg.

The first locally produced green hydrogen in Duisburg could be deployed by Duisburger Verkehrs- und Versorgungsgesellschaft (DVV), Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg (WBD) and Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) for their local operations.

Lhyfe has founded the company Duisburg Hydrogen and will use it to conduct the feasibility study. "The construction of the first large-scale electrolyser in the Port of Duisburg would be a milestone on the way to decarbonising the local economy and industry," says Duisport CEO Markus Bangen.

DVV will use the sustainable energy carrier for its hydrogen buses, WBD power its hydrogen-powered refuse collection vehicles with it, and Duisport will deploy the green fuel for internal port logistics and the operation of the DGT.

The aim is to turn "the Duisburg Gateway Terminal not only into the largest container terminal in Europe's hinterland, but also to operate it with no negative impact on the environment." (lh)
