Economic waves hit Hamburg port

The port of Hamburg faced geopolitical and economic challenges in 2023, resulting in a 4.7% decline in seaborne cargo volumes compared to 2022. Container throughput decreased by 6.9%, but showed a slight recovery in the second half of the year. Despite these difficulties, bulk cargo throughput remained stable, ensuring a consistent supply for Germany's economy.

The port maintained its market share among Northern European competitors, with a less pronounced drop in containerised cargo. USA traffic reached a record level, with 653,000 teu handled, marking an 8% uptick compared to 2022.

The port also welcomed more large container ships, with a rise in calls by vessels of 18,000 teu and above. Hinterland traffic to and from the port remained relatively robust, with rail transport leading the modal split at 53.5%. (pb)
