DPD opens its largest parcel sorting centre in Germany

DPD is commencing operations at a new parcel sorting centre in Hamm (Germany) this week. The facility, the largest that the company has ever built in Germany, will handle around 80,000 parcels per day on an area totalling 122,000 sqm, as from 7 September. The parcel volume will gradually rise to 200,000 per day.

The new depot is equipped with an extremely powerful, fully automatic sorting system. When finished, it will be able to process up to 30,000 packages per hour. Initially more than 350 employees will work in Hamm. That number will increase to over 800 in the end phase.

The Hamm centre is replacing the regional parcel depot in Unna-Königsborn. Given the strong growth rates, the capacities there are insufficient. DPD will not fully withdraw from Unna as its national distribution centre in the Unna industrial park Unna will be retained. (mw)
