DNV guidance on Hong Kong Convention
DNV has released a guide, entitled ‘Safe and green recycling for shipowners’, designed to help shipowners comply with regulations laid down in the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) and the EU Ship Recycling Regulations.
The HKC takes effect on 26 June, setting global standards for “safer and more sustainable ship recycling,” as DNV said. With thousands of vessels set for recycling in the coming years, DNV describes the HKC as “an important step towards safer and more sustainable ship recycling.”
24 countries have already ratified the HKC, including “the four largest recycling nations by tonnage” – India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey. DNV’s guide outlines the regulatory framework as well as the best practices for the responsible management of maritime vessels reaching the end of their life cycle. (js)
