Developing India’s next big port
HMM, represented by Daljoong Jeong (managing director of HMM India, right), has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), represented by its chairman Unmesh Sharad Wagh (left), to collaborate on developing Vadhvan Port.
Under the mou the Korean company will support the development and operation of the large-scale project by the Indian government, represented by Sarbananda Sonowal (minister of ports, shipping and waterways), to become one of the world’s top ten container ports by 2040.
The port will handle 23 million teu annually and include nine container terminals. With a natural depth of 20 m, deeper than the 15.5 m at Nhava Sheva, it will be able to accommodate HMM’s 24,000 teu vessels and offer strong connectivity to India’s inland logistics networks.
HMM is simultaneously expanding its services in the region, specifically its Far East–India Mediterranean route (FIM) and its India–America Express service (IAX). On top of this it is also adding an India–North Europe Express service (INX), which will start next month. (ah)
