Circular economy initiative in Belgium

The ports of Ostend and Liège have signed a letter of intent to increase collaboration and the exchange of information, particularly concerning the future dismantlement of offshore wind turbines in the North Sea.

Belgium has about 1,500 onshore and offshore wind turbines, with Ostend being a global player in installing and operating offshore wind farms. As these turbines reach the end of their 20 to 25-year lifespan, they must be replaced with more efficient models.

Ostend alone will need to dismantle around 400 turbines starting from 2030. Once dismantled, materials such as steel, copper, aluminium, cables, concrete, and metals can be recycled.

The ports are working together to transport these turbines or their parts by water to Liège for recycling. The partnership is seen as an opportunity for the region to further recycling and circular economy initiatives, creating growth and employment prospects. (pb)
