China’s largest container now in rail service

China Railways will use the new 50 ft containers for domestic intermodal services. The first train carrying 46 of these boxes recently departed from Guangzhou International Port Station. Services from Shanghai Minhang Station, Changsha North Station, and Kunming Wangjiaying West Station are to be added shortly.

According to the China Railway Group, the new 50 foot containers weigh 36 t, have a payload of 30.85 t, and a volume capacity of 114.4 cbm. Therefore, they provide 50% more volume capacity compared to the international standard 40 ft container. (ben)
