China pushes rail services to Central Asia

Chongqing has launched its first direct railfreight service to Afghanistan. The first train is now on route, carrying 55 containers of communication equipment.

After its departure last Monday, it will arrive in Hairatan (Afghanistan) next week, after a 12-15-day journey. The service will cut transit time by 3 - 5 days.

The new train represents the ongoing expansion of Chongqing’s Central Asia railway routes and the opening of a new overland trade link between China and Afghanistan. In the last few years Chongqing has become a key inland hub for China–Europe trains, and the ‘New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor’ (ILSTC). In January an ILSTC cross-border road freight service started, with 689 trips. (ben)
