Carriers sponsor climate change campaign

The skipper Boris Herrmann, whose Team Malizia gained notoriety in 2020 when he competed in the Vendee Globe 2020 ocean race while carrying the message “A Race We Must Win” on the sails of his yacht, signed an official partnership contract with carriers Hapag-Lloyd and Kuehne + Nagel, amongst others, for five years.

Besides sports, the team Malizia aims to raise awareness of climate change. During its sailing missions Team Malizia has collected valuable scientific data from the most remote parts of the world to help understand the impact of climate change on the ocean.

Herrmann spoke of Hapag-Lloyd saying that "over the last year we have already developed a strong partnership" and "the true ambition of Hapag-Lloyd to become a leader in decarbonisation."

Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen said that Herrmann and the carrier share "the same values, as together we want to help to find solutions for counteracting the climate crisis.”

Otto Schacht, member of the management board of Kuehne + Nagel International, responsible for sea freight, commented: “We are excited to continue this journey with Team Malizia commonly striving to raise awareness and drive a sustainable future.”

Herrmann and Team Malizia will participate in The Ocean Race 2022/23 and the Vendee globe 2024/25 with a new race yacht built with German-based Greenboats and Schütz. (cd)
