Bremen’s ports are methanol-ready

Bremen’s gateways have introduced clear regulations for methanol bunkering, reinforcing their role in alternative marine fuels. While LNG has been in use since 2015, methanol is gaining significance.

“LNG bunkering has been possible for years, now Bremen’s ports are also methanol-ready," said Kristina Vogt, senator for economic affairs. Bremen already has methanol-capable storage on the Weser, and bunker suppliers in Bremerhaven are planning expansions.

A structured authorisation procedure now ensures safe bunkering. “Bunkering fuels with a flash point below 55°C, such as LNG and methanol, requires specific precautions. Our new guidelines provide clarity,” said port captain Stephan Berger.

Robert Howe, the managing director of Bremenports, sees ‘methanol-ready’ as a competitive advantage. “We support low-carbon fuels in shipping – this is active climate protection. The fact that we already have clear processes for methanol and LNG is a strong step forward.” (ah)
