BNSF upgrading and extending network

The US Class I railway BNSF is set to invest USD 3.8 billion in its network. The largest component is devoted to maintenance projects, including replacing and upgrading railtracks, infrastructure such as ballast and rail ties, and maintaining rolling stock. It will consist of 18,400 km of track surfacing and/or undercutting work.

The second part of this year’s capital plan has been earmarked for expansion and efficiency projects. Besides upgrading terminals, BNSF also plans line expansions to increase capacity and improve service recoverability on its ‘Southern Transcon’ route between southern California and the Midwest. BNSF will also increase siding capacity on its mainline track near Phoenix AZ. (ben)
