Better times for Bremen

Despite corona, the ports of Bremen showed an improved performance in 2021. The quays and terminals in Bremen and Bremerhaven handled 69.7 million t of seaborne cargo in 2021, an increase of 4.8%. The ports were thus able to make up for the losses in seaborne throughput (66.5 million t in 2019) caused by the pandemic. Total throughput in 2021 is slightly above the result of 2019 (69.4 million t).

The preliminary throughput result for 2021 comprises cargo handling at the port facilities in the city of Bremen with 12.9 million t (+23.6%) and Bremerhaven with 56.8 million t (+1.3%). Whereas Bremerhaven returned to the level of throughput of 2019, the city of Bremen was even slightly above 2019’s figures.

General cargo throughput increased by 3.7% to just under 60 million t. At 5.6 million t, container throughput also posted a slight rise of 1.1%, with 5.2% more standard containers (teu) crossing the quays (a total of over 5 million teu). Bremerhaven's vehicle throughput remained stable at just over 1.7 million vehicles (minus 0.8%). (sh)
