Barcelona calls for greater port autonomy

Spain’s Puertos del Estado recently organised a meeting for port authority presidents and directors in Palma de Mallorca. During the gathering, which was held to share positions on the new strategic framework of Spain’s port system, the port of Barcelona called for more autonomy for managing the state ports integrated into the Trans-European Transport Network (Ten-T)’s core network.

Barcelona’s port president Mercè Conesa said at the meeting. “This autonomy of management must be put into practice in four areas: setting fees, developing and leading infrastructures, fully regulating port services and decision-making capacity.”

Before the meeting, each of the ports had responded to a questionnaire. With these contributions - and those of other players and organisations - Puertos del Estado aims to draft a new document to update the current strategic framework that was laid down in 1998. (kd)
