Alexandria welcomes new IMO regional hub
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has inaugurated a regional presence office (RPO) in Alexandria (Egypt). The new bureau will strengthen maritime safety, security and environmental sustainability in the Middle East and North Africa.
The office will enhance regional cooperation and capacity building, addressing the specific maritime needs of the region, including crucial trade routes, such as the Suez Canal.
The launch, attended by senior officials, including IMO secretary general Arsenio Dominguez and Egyptian deputy prime minister Kamel Al-Wazir, underscores Egypt’s pivotal maritime role.
The RPO will also monitor progress on and support greener shipping practices, in line with the IMO’s global efforts for sustainable maritime operations. (pb)
