Air shipment stopped at Leipzig/Halle airport
16 pieces of rhinoceros horn weighing 6.5 kg were seized by customs at the end of May 2022 during the inspection of an air cargo shipment at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The package came from Angola and was to be transported to Vietnam via Germany.
Great efforts had been made to hide the parts of the horn. Thus, the consignment actually contained a chandelier. But the X-ray image showed irregularities. After opening it, the customs officers discovered that the wooden box in which the chandelier was stowed had a false bottom. Concealed in this secret space, the offers found 16 horn pieces compacted in wood flour. Customs at Leipzig Airport had already seized 15 pieces of rhinoceros horn back in December 2021. (cj)
