A team to build the first wind-powered ro-ro vessel
Naval architects will make a joint effort to build what they boast will be "the world’s first wind-powered ro-ro vessel". Wallenius Marine and Knud E. Hansen recently inked an agreement to design the ship. “Orcelle Wind” is the first vessel from the wind-powered shipping concept Oceanbird.
The vessel will use wind as the main form of propulsion, operate at speeds of 10-12 knots under sail that can be increased with a supplemental power system and reduce emissions by as much as 90%. It will have a capacity to carry 7,000 cars along with breakbulk and rolling equipment. The newbuild will be the next extension of the Wallenius Wilhelmsen fleet, which currently operates over 130 vessels. (cd)
