13 years and counting as #1, thanks to three runways

Traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw robust growth in 2024, when the airport entered a new era, as it added a third runway last year. Flight movements in December rose by 12.5% to 33,550 year-on-year. Cargo throughput in December increased by 6.6% year-on-year to 446,000 t. Total cargo throughput saw growth of 14%, to 4.9 million t.

This increase was mainly attributed to exports (+20%), with the most significant increases recorded in traffic to and from key trading regions in Europe, North America and the Middle East.

Vivian Cheung, the acting CEO of Hong Kong’s airport authority, is happy that “2024 was a fruitful and rewarding year for HKIA. We commissioned our third runway in November, on time and in budget, and were crowned the world’s busiest cargo airport for the 13th time since 2010.” (ah)
