Wagonload traffic still a problem
Swiss railfreight operator SBB Cargo again posted a loss of CHF 325 million last year due to corona-related weak demand for transport services. However, this loss was lower than in 2020 thanks to cost-cutting measures, higher revenues and greater support from the federal government. Transport performance amounted to 5,256 million tkm, 0.2% lower than the previous year but 22% lower than in 2019.
The current year will be marked by efficiency improvements and a change of course in domestic freight transport. In particular, SBB Cargo and the federal government must find a solution for wagonload traffic, which has been operating at a loss for years, but which makes an important contribution to the modal shift in freight traffic, SBB Cargo said.
