Transport solution for high-cube containers launched
The first train has completed a run on the new trans-Pennine railfreight link connecting Teesport and Manchester (both England).
The return service, operated five days a week, is initially being run as a trial, part of a collaboration between Direct Rail Services (DRS) and PD Ports, which operates a railfreight terminal at the heart of Tees Dock.
Each one-way run in the new service could remove 40 heavy goods vehicles from the congested trans-Pennine road network, PD Ports said. The train can transport ultra-low IDA wagons, enabling it to move high-cube containers on non-gauge enhanced and height-restricted routes across the Pennines for the first time. (ben)
