Tazara concession deal to be finalised this year
Representatives from China, Tanzania and Zambia recently signed an MOU for the concession to run the Tanzania-Zambia Railway. The signing marks a significant step towards the revitalisation of the line's infrastructure and rolling stock, according to the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara).
The aim is to finalise a concession agreement by the end of the year. The rehabilitation of both infrastructure and rolling stock will take about two years. The concession will cover a period of 30 years.
The line's annual tonnage is expected to rise from the current combined average of 500,000 t for all operators to 2 million t, Tazara said. (ben)
