Swiss railfreight slows down

In a difficult economic environment including a decline in industrial production in Europe, Switzerland’s railfreight sector recorded a transport performance of 2.86 billion net tonne kilometres in Q4/2023, which is below the level of the second half of the pandemic year 2020. Railfreight volumes fell by 5.4% compared to Q4/2022 and by 0.3% compared to Q3/2023.

According to a report published by the Swiss public transport association Litra, the drop occurred despite the fact that most of the Gotthard Base Tunnel had been reopened to freight traffic following its partial closure in the summer. The railfreight sector posted a demand for 52.08 million train-path kilometres in Q4/2023, 0.3% down from Q4/2022. (ben)
